Why enjoyment is important
Behavior has two fuel sources: Willpower and Motivation. When a habit is sustained through willpower, we experience it as a chore. When a habit is sustained by motivation, we experience it as a hobby.
There are different types of motivation. One type is goal-oriented (e.g. wanting results). Another type of motivation is enjoyment (i.e. enjoying the activity for its own sake).
Our consistency and effort are maximized when willpower, goals, and enjoyment are all aligned. The Moeller Method is designed with this principle in mind. That is why it programs movement patterns (e.g. squat, horizontal push), not movement variations (e.g. barbell back squat, dumbbell bench press). It has enough structure that we strengthen all patterns consistently (thus producing results), and it has enough flexibility that we can select the most enjoyable variations day-by-day (thus maximizing enjoyment).
Enjoyment supports consistency and fuels effort. As the saying goes, “The man who loves walking will walk further than the man who loves the destination.”
